Clinical Findings

Behavioral aberrations range from frequent, intermittent estrus with exaggerated monosexual drive to bull-like behavior (bulling), including mounting, pawing the ground, and bellowing. This behavior may be accompanied by masculinization of the head and neck. Relaxation of the vulva, perineum, and the large pelvic ligaments, which causes the tail head to be elevated, can occur in chronic cases. Some affected cows show these signs, but others may be sexually quiescent; anestrous cows are the most common presentation. This variation is due to the duration of the condition and the nature of the hormone signals or lack thereof from the diseased ovary.

The affected ovaries generally are enlarged and rounded, but their size varies, depending on the number and size of cysts. Their surface is smooth, elevated, and blister-like, particularly when cysts exceed 2.5–3 cm in diameter. Cysts frequently are multiple and may approach 4–6 cm in diameter.

Paraphimosis in dogs

The inability to completely retract the penis into the preputial cavity usually occurs after erection. It is seen most often after semen collection or coitus. The skin at the preputial orifice becomes inverted, trapping the extruded penis and impairing venous drainage. Other causes of paraphimosis include mild phimosis, foreign objects around the penis, a constricting band of hair at the preputial orifice, or trauma. Paraphimosis is easily differentiated from priapism, congenitally shortened prepuce, congenital deformity of the os penis, or paralysis of the retractor penis muscles on the basis of physical examination and palpation.

Brucellosis in animals

Brucellosis in animals is generally typified by late-term abortions and inflammatory lesions in the male reproductive tract.
In cattle:

Brucella abortus is the strain that most commonly infects cattle.
- B. suis and B. melitensis infections can occur if cattle are in contact with infected pigs or goats.
  - Less severe disease occurs when cattle are infected with these stains.
Infection most commonly occurs via ingestion, but B. abortus can also be transmitted venereally.
Adult cows are more susceptible than young stock.
In cows: Bacteremia and colonization of the mammary gland and supramammary lymph nodes lead to suppurative placentitis, necrosis of cotyledons and abortion.
